2023 Cost to Build Calculator for House Plans

how much does it cost to build a house

Here are the average costs to build a single-family home by square footage. Even though building a house is an expensive endeavor, it can be considered more cost-effective than buying an older property. The initial cost of building a house will be larger, but you won't have to worry about repairs, updating, or remodeling for a long time. Plus, new build houses are more desirable and will likely sell at higher values. When you choose to build your own house, you can choose from several options. Specifically, you can go three different routes when deciding to build your house from scratch, each of which varies in price.

Obtain Permits and Inspections

Nick’s work includes DIY guides, informational articles and financial content, all of which aim to demystify unfamiliar subjects for homeowners and build their confidence. The state you build in has a huge impact on the cost of a new home, as does the specific region within that state. Metropolitan areas tend to have higher local labor costs, while more rural areas often come with the cost of installing a private septic system or a long driveway.

How Much Does it Cost to Build a Custom Home?

This will help ensure you are in the best financial place to build a house from scratch. Of that costly interior finishes category, cabinets and countertops cost close to $18,000 or about 4.5-percent of the total building cost. Higher-end quartz countertops alone range from $2,120 to $5,960 per installation.

Land Prep

These permits tend to cost between $1,200 and $2,000, but the actual amount varies depending on the regulations in the local area. If you are buying raw, undeveloped land in a rural setting, you might have to add a septic tank for your wastewater needs. You will also need to run utility lines back to your property, and possibly factor in the cost of grading the land and laying a driveway. Another option in this arena is to purchase a new prefabricated tiny home. Simple Terra offers a 1-bedroom container home with 320 square feet of interior space and a 160-square-foot outdoor covered deck for $38,000.

It will also regulate the home’s energy efficiency to save you money over time, though you’ll first have to spend $3,000 to $10,000 on the upfront cost to have insulation installed during a new build. Depending on where you live, your building permit costs will range from $400 to $4,000, and inspections will cost an average of $5,000. Your contractor can accurately schedule the inspections that will need to be carried out during construction. You will need to contact a lender and figure out what kind of mortgage you will qualify for. This price does not include the cost of land or a septic system and water and electrical lines for new construction—if you are building in a rural area.

Save on the Cost of Final Steps

Interior finishes could cost around $75,000, though that number could easily be much higher, depending on your choices. Once this step is finished, your home’s construction will be all but complete. Once the skeleton is built, all the necessary external elements of the walls, roofs and openings will be installed. This means exterior finishes like the siding will be put up on the walls, then windows and doors will be put in, after which the roof will be sheathed – covered in roofing felt and nailed-on shingles. Once you’ve got your land, your general contractor and subcontractors will start preparing to build the house. This stage includes purchasing all the necessary permits and having an architect draw up floor plans for the home.

How to Save Money Building a House

Her creative talents shine through her contributions to the popular video series "Home Lore" and "The Red Desk," which were nominated for the prestigious Shorty Awards. In her spare time, Miranda enjoys traveling, actively engages in the entrepreneurial community, and savors a perfectly brewed cup of coffee. Let’s answer some frequently asked questions regarding how much it costs to build a house.

how much does it cost to build a house

A homeowner can install floor coverings like luxury vinyl or laminate or install window treatments. Investigate appliance reviews for less expensive products that deliver the features you want for less money. Once built, you or your contractor will schedule a final inspection to obtain a certificate of occupancy. This is the official document that verifies that all work on the home was done to code and the structure is safe for people to live in.

American Family Insurance explains some advantages to building a house from the ground up. Jauregui Architects in Houston is another luxury custom home builder that does ‘big-ticket items.’ At $400 to $500 per heated square foot, its homes are inclusive of all improvements. This Tuscan transitional home in Houston was designed and built by Jauregui Architects.

Not only will you have to purchase a plot of land, but you’ll have to have it cleared. Removing this category from the total house-building cost saves six-percent or $23,650 of the total cost. The vast category of interior finishes, about 24-percent or $94,300 of the cost of building a house, lends itself well to DIY work. On average per house, home builders charge $92,720 for sales commissions, marketing, and profit.

A low-entry shower, wide doorways, and a three-season room perfect for an indoor-outdoor living are just some of the features of the luxury home. Manufactured homes often look like trailers or mobile homes and are considered as affordable housing. While these structures are made of one or more sections intended to be delivered for erection, no wheels, axles, or towbars are included in these costs. These figures include costs such as delivery to the site, setting on piers, finishing, connection to utility lines, permits, and inspections.

Average costs to build a home in each state are listed in the table below, but treat these as simply a starting point. Compared to buying in a subdivision that is being developed, you have a lot more control and influence on the project when building a custom home with your selected general contractor. However, you'll also have more responsibility and decisions to make along the way. Add an average of $8,700 for HVAC, $3,400 for cabinets, and $2,400 for appliances. Material costs will vary depending on your building material choices regarding long-term durability, eco-friendliness, energy costs, and social costs. The main reason to build a house from scratch is that it can be customized to fit your needs.

For mid-grade homes, $200 to $250 per square foot is the common range for most companies that do turnkey services, meaning they perform the full suite of manufacturing, assembling, and finishing the home. The important thing to remember is to hire them early on in the process so they can work together to bring you the best plans and designs according to your budget. This will help you get feedback on pricing and avoid extra costs in overdesigns. For instance, you’ll want to weigh the customization that comes with building a new home against the convenience of buying something preexisting. Although the process of securing financing for a preexisting home might feel intimidating at first, it’s much simpler than if you’re building a house from the foundation up.

Meanwhile, exterior finishing prices depend on the number and type of siding, trim, doors, and windows. Good quality interior walls are typically made of gypsum wallboard with putty or texture coat finish. There are also decorative details in the living room, entryway, and kitchen.

For example, if you need a one-story place that is wheelchair accessible, it is easily created by building your house from scratch. Moreover, you can choose just about everything that goes into it and create a home that works well for you. Framing creates your house's structure, making it a necessary expense in your home build. In addition, framing acts as a support for your house's windows, doors, walls, and roof, making the $20,000 to $25,000 cost a worthwhile expense. Featured here is a 3,500-square-foot, two-bedroom custom home built by Missouri-based firm Hibbs Homes. Situated in a large wooded lot, the home was designed for the owners to age in place.

Alaska Small Ship Adventure Cruises Get Closer

Second, if I don’t answer them first, the rest of the itinerary is a little confusing. Let’s cover them quickly, then read on for two in-depth 5-day Alaska itinerary options – all ready to help you plan your trip. Excursions Are Pricey (But Worth It)Excursions were mentioned above, but we didn’t mention price. If you’re used to sailing the Caribbean, be prepared for sticker shock. The outings here are typically much higher priced than elsewhere. You can still find things to do under $100 per head, but most trips run at least $150 in our experience, with high-end excursions like helicopter tours running $300+ per person.

Best Alaska Cruises to Take This Summer, According to Experts

From day one we were immersed in experiences that brought a sense of wonder and excitement. From visiting the kittywake colony and the haunts of salmon, sea lions and seals, to watching rafts of otters with their adorable babies, or an escort of Dall’s porpoises. From hiking in forest by a rushing meltwater stream, passing peat bogs and wild blueberries, to kayaking through ice fractured from nearby glaciers. Just the experience of being on the boat in beautiful Prince William Sound surrounded by beauty night and day was a lifetime high point.

What is the best time to cruise to Alaska?

I’m probably biased, but I consider Denali National Park the best national park in the country. It’s massive, it’s wild, it’s empty – and there are no crowds beyond those you bring with you. Because Denali National Park has managed access, you can’t drive your own vehicle (or rental) into the park; the only way to visit the majority of the park is on a bus tour. Once you arrive in Denali, you’ll need to get a transfer to your hotel. Below, I break down each of these days in a ton more detail, plus I recommend restaurants and hotels to make the whole process super easy to book right from this post. You can literally click each link and put in your dates of travel to make your Alaska trip happen.

When packing for an Alaska cruise, you’ll need to take into account the weather, the activities you plan on doing, and the ports of call you’ll be visiting. Short Alaska cruises are a great way to experience the best of Alaska without having to commit to a long vacation. With a variety of itineraries to choose from, there is sure to be a short Alaska cruise that is perfect for you. Short Alaska cruises typically visit a limited number of ports of call. The most common ports of call on short Alaska cruises include Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway.

Tips & Things to Know About Sailing Alaska

With some of the most stunning wilderness in existence and famous wildlife, it’s part of the definitive experience of traveling to the Great Land’s wild interior. An open bar, all shore tours, hotel accommodations and airport transfers are included in the price. The ships cruise between Sitka and Juneau, stopping for nature activities at places like Admiralty and Brothers Islands, with glacier-viewing at Tracy or Endicott Arms along the way. There are no traditional port calls on these cruises; your time is almost entirely spent on the water, with stops for hiking, wildlife-viewing and from-land fishing. Don’t Miss the Scenery Between PortsSail to the Caribbean and the schedule is typically stop in a port, enjoy the day, and then get back on the ship. Once the ship departs, there’s not much to see as you sail to the next port of call.

On an Alaska cruise, let us show you Glacier Bay National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier. Follow in the footsteps of the Yukon Gold Rush on an Alaska cruise from Seattle to some of the world’s most scenic wonders. With convenient weekend departures and proximity to the Great Land, a cruise to Alaska from Seattle allows you to leave when you want, and spend less time getting there. Our voyage on the Discovery in July 2019 surpassed all expectations. Not being keen on big ship cruising, yet having a husband who is reluctant to rough it, a six day trip on this sturdy and surprisingly spacious vessel had to be the ideal solution. Probably one of, if not the best, trips of our long, very well travelled, off the beaten track lives.

Most people tend to focus on the Caribbean for summer cruises, but an Alaska summer vacation can be a great option, too. Embark on a thrilling journey with young explorers through breathtaking landscapes. In the center of the state, Denali National Park is blanketed in wildflowers punctuated with mountains, raging rivers and serene lakes. Denali, "The Great One," formerly known as Mt. McKinley, rises to the tallest peak in North America and can be seen from as far away as Anchorage on a clear day. An up-close view is more than worth the expedition during your vacation.

With Princess, you won’t just explore Alaska’s landscapes, you’ll live amidst them in our custom-built wilderness lodges. Located riverside next to some of the most renowned national parks, these warm and welcoming lodges are the perfect spot to bask in Alaska’s best attractions. As a part of your Alaska cruisetour, explore and unwind with comforting amenities and breathtaking scenery. The line generally doesn't stop in touristy ports like Skagway, and instead keeps its ships close to Alaska's wilderness, though Wrangell, Misty Fjords and Tracy Arm do feature on some itineraries. With national parks and four of North America’s tallest mountains, Alaska’s wilderness has been preserved for generations. Denali National Park is larger than Vermont and home to the highest peak on the continent.

I started this site to share my travel stories and inspiration to help you complete bucket list trips. Here’s where Itinerary B gets interesting (compared to Itinerary A, which it has been mirroring up to this point). While Itinerary A travelers will head north from Denali, those of you who choose Itinerary B will head south, back toward Anchorage. Your departure time will have the largest impact on how much you can do during your day in Fairbanks. Most flights leave in the evening or as red-eye flights, so you should have pretty much the whole day. It will make life a lot easier if you rent a car for the day, but you won’t need a hotel.

Dining options that are included in the ticket are Pinnacle Grill, Lido Market and The Dining Room. There are also other dining options onboard (at an additional cost) including a cafe, sushi restaurant and a pizzeria. Legs., where you can enjoy acrobatic and vocal performances by talented artists, and Pixels, a venue where you can immerse yourself in live music and cinematography shows.

Aboard one of Oceania Cruises’ ships, you will be staying in luxurious suites and rooms that are furnished in the neoclassical style. Carnival Cruise Line is all about making the cruise experience enjoyable for everyone. Onboard activities are diverse and numerous — ensuring that no matter the age group of the people you’re cruising with, there’s an activity to be enjoyed. But even if you don’t get one (they are more expensive), you will have plenty of opportunity to see the scenery.

Cruises shorter than 7 days are not considered to be Alaska cruises by most cruise lines. In any event, it’s a long day of travel; you might have some time to explore Denali in the morning, but I recommend taking it easy so you get to Seward without being exhausted. Again, this day is the same as I recommended in Itinerary A – you’ll spend this whole day visiting Denali National Park on a bus tour. Alaskan cruises offered by Oceania Cruises are premium experiences.

Alaska is a land of beauty and wonder, with towering mountains, lush forests, and sparkling glaciers. It’s also a land of adventure, with opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. But if you’re short on time, you may be wondering if it’s possible to experience all that Alaska has to offer on a short cruise.

Progreso Mexico Yucatán Cruise Port Guide: Review 2023

cruise port in progreso yucatan mexico

Exploring the local market in Progreso also allows visitors to an unlimited buffet and seafood. It adds to the local culinary experience for the passengers. Though you can choose a cheap cruise line such as Carnival cruise to visit these areas. On the other hand, Progreso presents a more traditional port town ambiance, with shops and restaurants lining the Malecon. Tropical beaches and cold brews are a match made in heaven and on the Mexican Beer Tasting, Pub Crawl & Beach shore excursion, you will get ample fill of both. The Uxmal Mayan Ruins shore excursion is a 6-7 hour guided journey through time and an example of what makes Progreso such a unique stop when cruising to Mexico.

Hit the Beach

Merchandise is attractively presented and decently priced and, contrary to expectation, we found several items to be cheaper and better quality here than in the town itself. It's a 15-minute bus ride to the town proper where some cruisers complain of being hassled. A tour of Progreso won't take more than 45 minutes, so after that take your pick between shopping or la playa (the beach) -- or both. The symbol for pesos is the same as for US dollars, which can be slightly confusing. Prices in dollars (in tourist areas) are labeled "US$" or sport an S with a double stroke. Lots of history with buildings dating back to the 1500s and the oldest cathedral of the Americas.

Dining Options at Costa Maya vs Progresso

With a wide expanse of sand you’ll likely see volleyball or soccer games being played, sunbathers, swimmers, and vendors. Beaches in Mexico are free for the public to use and you can setup anywhere you like. There are no areas that are for restaurant customers only (although loungers and umbrellas will be for customers only). Progreso Beach is the quick and easy option for most cruise visitors because it is by the dock. The most famous and popular attraction is the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, which is about halfway between Progreso and Cancun.

Related Cruises

The frequency and schedule of these shuttle buses align with the arrival and departure times of cruises at the port. They operate in sync with Progreso cruise port schedules to ensure that passengers have sufficient time to explore all that this charming destination has to offer. Progreso is best known for having the world's longest pier (raised in the sea structure supported by piles or pillars). The bridge-looking pier has the staggering length of 6,5 km (4 mi) and was built using reinforced concrete and stainless steel (containing nickel). Its unusual length allows docking of large vessels as the coastal waters of Yucatan are very shallow.

You’ll see things like the Ferris wheel and other attractions. The “Nuevo Malecon International” features amusement rides, sculptures, photo ops, and more. It’s a place where you can explore a little, take a stroll, and enjoy the scenery. This ancient city, which was first built around 900 A.D., is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the second most-visited archaeological site in Mexico. The massive ruins are both educational and astonishing for their size and complexity. Like Cancun, Progreso is on a narrow cape of land that extends out from the coast.

During your 3.5-hour tour, your guide will show you all around this beautiful Mayan city. Xcambo dates back to 150 BC and it served as a critical port for the nearby Mayan city of Izamal. The city was also known for its handcraft production and its role as a salt distributor... As mentioned above, because the coastline around Progreso is so shallow, cruise ships have to dock at the end of the 4 mile long, world  record-setting Progreso Pier.

While it is a distance, about three hours, it is worth knowing about in case you have the opportunity to visit. The pink color is created from red-colored algae, plankton and brine shrimp who love the salty water as a habitat. With a beachfront setting, Eladio’s Bar offers complimentary sampler plates before your main dish arrives. Traditional Mexican offerings that can be accompanied by spicy peppers, there is enough variety on the menu to please everyone.

The White City

Costa Maya is known for its resort-like atmosphere and beachfront shopping area, providing a convenient and relaxing experience. But Progreso has a more traditional Mexican feel, with a vibrant malecon along the beach. That offers local restaurants, shops, and a bustling market.

Related Caribbean cruise ports Reviews

The ideal time to visit Puerto Progreso is between November and April, when the weather is warm and dry, with temperatures ranging from 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 29°C). This is also the peak season for tourism, so expect larger crowds and higher prices. For those looking for a quieter experience, the off-season months of May to October may be more appealing but be prepared for the occasional tropical storm or rain shower. The Yucatan Peninsula is home to several remarkable Mayan ruins.

The facility is served by 82 employees and generates ~1000 indirect/logistics-related jobs. It offers a chance to swim in these amazing natural features in crystal clear water. Many people like to stay on the ship in ports of call as it gives them an opportunity to enjoy the ship without the same crowds that are around when everyone is back on board.

Progreso feels less touristy and more authentic than Cozumel, for example. When it comes to dining in Progreso, cruise travelers can indulge in a delightful array of local cuisine and flavors. The vibrant culinary scene offers a range of options to suit every palate. For those seeking an authentic taste of Mexico, there are numerous restaurants and street vendors serving traditional dishes such as tacos al pastor, tamales, and ceviche. Experience Mayan RuinsThe Yucatan was a hot spot for Mayan civilization, and ruins continue to be discovered even today.

cruise port in progreso yucatan mexico

Few areas of Mexico boast such a historical pedigree as Progreso. Considered a happening spot on the Malecon, Crabster has a variety of seafood dishes, but pizza as well. You will find a selection of beers and fun shakes with candy toppings. There is absolutely no shortage of places to eat on the Malecon. A little ways off the touristy streets, La Plaza de Progreso is an inexpensive venue for a variety of household items, toys and clothes.

Along the Malecon, visitors can shop traditional Mexican handicrafts, clothing, and jewelry, providing an authentic Mexican shopping experience. Costa Maya stands out with its resort-like area situated right at the pier, offering visitors a beach and pool experience. Just next to the cruise port in Progreso, there is a colorful local market where you can stock up on all sorts of Yucatan specialties. The area is known for its fine quality hammocks, made from cactus fiber, as well as local jewelry of high quality.

Beyond the towering pyramids, Chichen Itza is a vast complex filled with remarkable structures like the Great Ball Court, the Temple of the Warriors, and the mysterious Cenote of Sacrifice. Since tourists rarely travel to Chicxulub, you'll likely be the only foreigner in the restaurant. The fish is caught each morning and brought fresh to the restaurant. Daniel and I shared one dish and thought it was plenty of food. And Progreso has a great, easy-to-reach beach -- a vast, clean, stretch of white sand on the Gulf of Mexico's so-called Costa Esmeralda.

However, Both Costa Maya and Progreso have their own distinct charm and appeal to their guest. Whether you prefer a beach-focused resort ambiance or a traditional Mexican heritage, both ports offer unique experiences. Passengers do not need passports to embark on closed-loop itineraries to the western Caribbean from the United States. This convenient option is offered by various major cruise lines departing from ports in Florida, New Orleans, and Galveston. While both towns offer unique experiences, Progreso seems to have more to offer in terms of history and culture.

The site is open from 8 am to 4 pm every day, and the admission price is $75MXN. The whole site is fairly large and has several areas for you to explore. The main square is mostly made up of municipal and religious buildings, with the rest of the site made up of various courtyards that archeologists believe to be residential areas.

Virgin Voyages Ships and Itineraries 2024, 2025, 2026

virgin voyages cruise ship

But our name goes far beyond the vivid, incandescent glow of the sea and the inevitable post-vacation glow we set out to give our Sailors. Each and every one of our ships rocks a beautiful and strong mermaid at its helm — and Brilliant Lady will be no different. So as we thought about the strength and resilience we’ve touched upon with our other mermaids, we also wanted to highlight the powerful intelligence of women across the globe. We — along with Scarlet, Valiant, and Resilient Lady — are delighted to welcome our fourth lady ship to the Virgin Voyages fleet. The Band — an adjustable cord bracelet with a scannable device attached — is your room key and charge "card" when you sail. It's also used to scan you on and off the ship when you go ashore.

Sea View

On Virgin, I was fully captivated for the length of the performance and often came out raving about the experience. I appreciate how the line has hired diverse performers in terms of race, size and gender expression, and how its shows do not shy away from mature language and sexual themes (both gay and straight). I did not have the normal dinner experience at Extra Virgin, the ship's Italian restaurant, due to the themed sailing I was on, but I still got to try some of the venue's popular dishes. Previous cruisers tell me Extra Virgin is a surprise favorite because Italian restaurants are so ubiquitous, but Virgin's version delivers with fabulous dishes. Everyone raves about the meatballs, the pappardelle pasta and the ricotta bomboloni (like Italian donut holes).

How Does Food Work on the Cruise? Is it Good?

Every cruise line has its own personality, and Virgin Voyages is no different. In our view, the atmosphere definitely tends to be more modern and a bit more “cool” than what’s seen on other lines. If Instagram built a cruise ship, it might look a bit like Virgin. Anyone who has sailed before knows that so much of your cruise is actually spent onboard the ship.

Company History

Grab a premade salad and take your pie out to the adjacent open-air patio to enjoy it in the Caribbean sunshine. The ultimate in casual dining, The Galley is Scarlet Lady's answer to the cruise ship buffet. It's more of a food hall with multiple themed stations (noodles, tacos, soup and salad, burgers, etc.) where you order by flagging down a waiter. It's your "get dolled up and eat steak" venue, with a glam vibe and large windows overlooking what else but the ship's wake. Toast yourself with a glass of bubbly while you dine like a king on clam chowder, roasted bone marrow, filet mignon and lamp chops. Seafood lovers should splurge on the extra-fee towers of lobster, oysters, shrimp, clams, mussels and crab.

The cabins were roughly the same size, but on the Virgin Voyages ship, I splurged for a private balcony.

If you’ve cruised before, it was likely on a line that has a credit card style room key that served to open your room, check you on and off the ship, and charge items to your onboard account. As you’d expect given the atmosphere on the ship, that “cool” factor extends to the cabin. You can expect the layout of the cruise cabin to be similar to other lines. You’ll have your bed, the bathroom, closet/storage, and balcony (with a hammock swing) if you choose that room type. Around the ship are lots of seating and daybeds built for two, which combined with the red you see everywhere, adds to the “sexiness” of the cruise ship.

For instance, there’s no roller coaster, go-kart track, zipline, rock-climbing wall or the like. That’s by design as these are largely included to appeal to kids and teens on the ship. However, if you’re someone that likes to be more active, you might be wanting more things to do.

The liner Scarlet Lady is the first cruise ship to stop at "Bimini Beach Club" (Virgin Group's private island resort in Bimini Bahamas). The exclusive destination allows Virgin's Sailors to enjoy world-class entertainment from a rotating cast of DJs led by Mark Ronson. Virgin's Bimini Beach Club offers premium food with locally sourced ingredients and traditional Bahamian favourites like banana leaf-wrapped queen snapper, conch and mango salad, Bahamian rum cake. The complex has 6 bars, outdoor lounge areas with hammock groves, beach loungers, watersport activities, (optional/at extra cost) private poolside and beach-side cabanas for rent. The ship takes an unconventional approach to cruise ship dining, with no main dining room, no buffet and no extra-fee restaurants.

If you don't know to get on board and immediately make reservations for all the restaurants, shows and fitness classes you want, you will find yourself locked out of meals and events you were looking forward to. Virgin ships are also seasonally deployed in Europe (via Transatlantic crossings), with planned visits to several major Mediterranean and UK ports (including Dover and Liverpool). In February 2020 was announced "The Band" - smart wearable technology to be introduced on Scarlet Lady (April 1). The device is made from recycled marine plastic (sustainability initiative) and developed via partnership with The Bionic Company.

Flexible Booking

In international waters and in places like Europe, where the drinking age is 18, the onboard drinking age is 18. Passengers will not receive keycards unless they have access to Richard's Rooftop, an exclusive sun deck reserved for cruisers booked in Rockstar Suites. Before you board, you'll link a credit card to your account (which you can do via the app prior to embarkation day) or put up a cash amount from which you can debit for purchases made on board.

Both ships also had spa centers with a range of massages and facials for an additional price. Treatments started at $100 on board Wonder of the Seas and $155 on board Valiant Lady. Both ships had a wide variety of entertainment, from dancing and gymnastics to comedy shows and concerts.

The Galley offers a lot of options, whether you want simple (burger and fries) to more adventurous (sushi, ramen). We especially enjoyed Pink Agave, the upscale Mexican restaurant where everything was phenomenal. One thing you’ll like about Virgin Voyages is that all food on the ship is included. In the cabin shower, there’s a rainfall showerhead included, instead of just the sprayer on the end of a wand. Your room is controlled by a tablet that acts as the remote control and can be used to dim lights, and even activate different colors to set the mood.

Would the four-night cruise from Miami, with stops in both Key West, Florida, and Bimini, Bahamas, impress me enough to consider Virgin Voyages for future trips? Here's what I took away from the experience — and whether I'd cruise with Virgin Voyages again. But before you roll your eyes, it's not just about clever word play and simply renaming traditional cruise venues -- Virgin has genuinely tried to do something different.

virgin voyages cruise ship

In late-September 2020 were canceled all Scarlet Lady's November itineraries, and in late-October - the remaining (December 2020) departures. The brand's inauguration was rescheduled for 2021 (January 3, then for May 9). The ship's originally planned inauguration was for March 29th, 2020 (3-day "Sneak-A-Peek Cruise").

Extra bathroom space with completely separate toilet and rainshower chambers. By far, our best Experience was a day sailing to the Pitons in Saint Lucia, where we stopped to snorkel and dropped anchor in a quiet yet colorful bay for local eats and Piton beer. Of the ship’s additional restaurants, we loved Pink Agave’s taste of Mexico through tlayuds, memelas, sopes, tortas, esquites, and tamales, but were less impressed by Test Kitchen.

If you've never cruised because you don't like kids, crowds, banquet-style dining or lackluster entertainment, this might be the ship that changes your mind. The top decks (15 – 17) are the places to head for fitness, fun in the sun or a combination of both. The Deck 15 Aquatic Club is where you'll find a standard pool and a well-being pool (essentially a large whirlpool), surrounded by day beds and lounge chairs. Additional sun-worshipping space can be found one deck up, including at the Athletic Club Bar at the back of the ship where you can perch on circular sunbeds or a suspended catamaran net with views to the wake below.

This concept works well when you have time to kill or the venue is empty. But when The Galley is packed, such as in the morning on a port day, it can take forever to catch the attention of a server and longer than you'd expect to receive your meal. You can find grab-and-go boxes in several locations on board, but the food selection is limited. I felt like I was eating out in a city, rather than at a hotel conference center, and that night-out vibe set the mood for the entire evening. Resilient Lady is homeported in Piraeus-Athens Greece (May through July 2024) for Aegean and Adriatic itineraries.

Cruises Without a Passport: Here's Everywhere You Can Cruise Without a Passport in 2024

do you need a passport for a mexico cruise

US citizens are required to present a valid passport book or passport card when entering Mexico. Always check your cruise line’s specific travel document requirements for more information on whether a passport card is an acceptable form of identification for your specific cruise. The WHTI aims to bolster border security while making entry into the U.S. more efficient for U.S. citizens and legitimate international travelers.

Requirements for a Mexican cruise: Do you need a passport?

Cruise line policies vary, but generally, children (under 18 years old) must be accompanied by an approved adult (21 years or older) within the same travel group. To verify age requirements and rules for minors, check the age policies of the cruise line you are traveling with. Please note that these requirements can change, so it’s always a good idea to check the latest information on the Norwegian Cruise Line’s website before your trip. The need for a passport during cruise travel is primarily determined by the nature of the cruise— specifically, whether it’s a closed-loop or open-loop cruise.

Travel document requirements for sailings from U.S. homeports (excluding Honoulu, Hawaii & Seward, Alaska)

These documents will permit you to receive a temporary passport to be used for reentry into the United States. Temporary passports are only valid for a short period of time and are given out to travelers who need to travel quickly but don't have time to wait for a standard passport. Embassy or consulate abroad, it typically takes only a few days for temporary passports to process and receive. Additionally, if you choose to go the passport card route, you’ll find it quite limiting. If you have any future plans of traveling internationally, paying the extra cost for a passport book is worth your time. Otherwise, as you can see from the list above, most popular Caribbean destinations are fair game.

Land and Sea Travel

Additionally, it's a good idea to check entry requirements of all individual ports in your itinerary, as you might need a visa as well. It is recommended to bring a certified birth certificate along with a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, when traveling to Mexico without a passport. This combination of documents can help establish both citizenship and identity. Closed loop cruises are a popular option for travelers who want to visit Mexico without a passport. These cruises depart from and return to the same U.S. port, making them a convenient and hassle-free choice.

Enhanced Driver’s License

If you’re driving you’ll also usually need a temporary import license for your vehicle. Travelers interested in a Mexico cruise are often unsure about the paperwork they need. Requirements are not necessarily the same as when flying and each country has a different policy regarding passports and visas. Whether you’ve been contemplating “do you need a passport for a Mexico cruise?

Passport validity refers to the length of time that your passport is considered valid for travel. It is important to note that different countries have different passport validity requirements. For example, some countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date.

Our expert recommendation for passport expediting services goes to Rush My Passport. Their courteous and professional team has offices across the US at the ready to help you get a new passport or renew an existing one quickly and without hassle. With their help, you can save both time and money compared to the costs of getting a rushed passport on your own.

Additionally, visas or travel permits may be required to enter some countries. To help eliminate any chance of losing your passport while on the ship, we recommend keeping it in your stateroom or suite. The in-room safes are easy to use and will keep your passport in a secure place at all times. When you’re on your cruise, there is no need to carry a passport on you since you’ll use your Sea Pass card for all transactions. Another thing you’ll want to check is the amount of blank pages in your passport. If you don’t have enough pages left for stamps, you’ll need to renew your passport before your trip.

Top Family-Friendly Cruises: The Best Cruises for Kids

Please check with your specific cruise line to confirm travel documents and age requirements for infants and children. U.S. citizens under 16 are exempt from the passport requirement for land and sea border crossings. Instead of a passport, children can use an original or certified copy of a U.S. state-issued birth certificate.

To avoid potential complications and ensure a smooth travel experience, it is highly recommended to obtain a valid passport before going on a Mexican cruise. Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America and UnCruise's Safari Explorer, both U.S.-flagged vessels, are the only cruise ships based in Hawaii. Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu, while Safari Explorer offers cruises between Molokai and the Big Island. Other lines and ships offer there-and-back Hawaii itineraries from ports like San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Basically, a closed-loop cruise leaves from and returns to the same U.S. port for embarkation and disembarkation. The rules for sea travel were established under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative and allow Americans to travel to Bermuda, the Bahamas, and Mexico without a passport, specifically on closed-loop sailings.

While there are exceptions and nuances, the safest and most hassle-free answer leans towards “yes”. It’s always recommended to check the specific entry conditions based on one’s nationality. But to ensure a smooth experience when setting foot on its shores, one must be well-acquainted with its entry requirements. Still, having a passport can expedite the process and ensure a smoother experience during your shore excursions. For many, a passport serves as a global ticket, allowing them to travel internationally.

As such, there were no FMM entry permit or Temporary Vehicle Import Permit (TIP) requirements. Any non-Mexican citizen must must present a valid form of travel documentation-as well as their Mexican tourist card-upon request. You can acquire this Mexican tourist card in advance of your trip and save yourself the time and stress of filling out the documentation while traveling. A visa or tourist card - also called a Forma Migratoria Multiple (FMM) is now required for all U.S. citizens visiting as tourist for six months.

It’s always advisable to check the specific requirements of your cruise line and the countries you’ll be visiting. Some cruises might include stops at foreign ports that require a valid passport book to leave the ship. Also, if a cruise starts or ends in a foreign country, including Canada, or if it starts and ends at different U.S. ports, a valid passport book is always required. The cruise line you’re traveling with may also have its own documentation requirements, which can include a passport book or passport card regardless of the itinerary.

All of the above considered, you should always check with your cruise line regarding what documents you may need for an upcoming cruise. The cruise line will be able to inform you of its policies, as well as requirements that will apply to your specific itinerary. Most cruise lines, however, do greatly encourage travelers to bring a passport as their primary form of ID. Regardless of cruise type, Holland America strongly advises all guests to carry a passport book that is valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of their travel date. Carnival Cruise Line strongly advises having a valid passport book while traveling. A passport book is not only the most reliable form of identification but if guests unexpectedly need to fly to or from the U.S. during their cruise, not having a passport book could cause big problems and delays.

If your child needs a U.S. passport, follow our complete guide on how to get a passport for a minor in just 3 steps. If needed, U.S. citizens can find travel visa requirements in the ‘Notices’ section of their Travel Summary. Visas can be acquired directly from the embassy or consulate of the countries to be visited. The requirements for visas and other documents can differ based on the destination and may change without any advance notice.

Passport cards are a more convenient and affordable option, as they are smaller in size and can be used for land and sea travel to Mexico and Canada. On the other hand, passport books are the traditional and widely accepted form of identification for international travel, including air travel. They are larger in size and provide more pages for visas and entry/exit stamps. If you plan on traveling to other countries or taking international flights in the future, a passport book may be the better choice.
